Buying a present for a 13-year-old girl is a very specific kind of pressure test. Too babyish and you’ll get The Look. Too grown-up and someone’s mum is messaging you. Somewhere in that narrow window between “toy” and “tell me about your skincare routine” is the perfect gift — and I’ve spent a long time in that window, so here’s the list I wish someone had handed me.

Yes some girls still write with a pen! There are some really pretty stationery sets out there, and thinks about journalling too, which is very popular, include stickers and gel pens.
